Engineering Summary

ASTM A536 Grade 100-70-03 is a premium high-strength, wear-resistant ductile cast iron. Produced with a fully pearlitic matrix structure (>85% fine pearlite) typically obtained through normalizing heat treatment or controlled cooling with pearlite-stabilizing additions (copper, tin, manganese). It guarantees a minimum tensile strength of 100 ksi (689 MPa), minimum yield strength of 70 ksi (483 MPa), and 3% minimum elongation, making it suited for high-stress gears, track rollers, and camshafts.

ASTM A536 Grade 100-70-03 Ductile Cast Iron Processing & Fabrication

Machining, joining, forming, and thermal processing ratings cataloged from the cited authoritative technical reference.

Source: ASTM International, CEN, ISO & ASM International Standards Technical Committees

Machinability

Moderate machinability (~60% relative to C36000 baseline). Pearlitic matrix and high hardness (240–300 HBW) demand rigid machine tools, coated carbide inserts, and reduced cutting speeds.

Weldability & Joining

Extremely difficult to weld. High hardenability promotes brittle martensitic HAZ; welding should be avoided on critical loaded sections.

Heat Treatment & Working Ranges

Normalized: heat to 870°C–900°C (1600°F–1650°F), hold 1 hour per 25 mm of thickness, air cool with fan assist. Can be oil quenched and tempered.

Forming & Cold Working

Non-deformable. Limited to casting net shape.
