7. Fabrication & Processing Comparison
ASTM A536 Grade 100-70-03 Ductile Cast Iron Characteristics:

Machinability: Moderate machinability (~60% relative to C36000 baseline). Pearlitic matrix and high hardness (240–300 HBW) demand rigid machine tools, coated carbide inserts, and reduced cutting speeds.

Weldability: Extremely difficult to weld. High hardenability promotes brittle martensitic HAZ; welding should be avoided on critical loaded sections.

Formability / Cold Working: Non-deformable. Limited to casting net shape.

Heat Treatment & Annealing: Normalized: heat to 870°C–900°C (1600°F–1650°F), hold 1 hour per 25 mm of thickness, air cool with fan assist. Can be oil quenched and tempered.

EN-GJS-700-2 Ductile Cast Iron Characteristics:

Machinability: Moderate to difficult machinability (~55% of C36000 baseline). Fully pearlitic matrix and high hardness (225–305 HBW) require coated carbide tooling and rigid setups.

Weldability: Extremely difficult to weld. High risk of martensite formation in the HAZ; welding is generally prohibited on stressed components.

Formability / Cold Working: Non-deformable.

Heat Treatment & Annealing: Normalized at 880°C–920°C followed by controlled air cooling to ensure a fully pearlitic matrix. Can be surface hardened by induction or flame to 55–60 HRC.
