7. Fabrication & Processing Comparison
Chloroprene Rubber (CR / Neoprene) Characteristics:

Machinability: Cryogenically turned, ground, or die-cut with heavy steel dies; cleanly cut with CNC waterjet.

Formability / Cold Working: Milled on standard rubber processing machinery; compounded with metal oxides (zinc oxide and magnesium oxide) rather than sulfur. Extruded, calendered, and compression/injection molded.

Heat Treatment & Annealing: Cured via metallic oxide crosslinking (5 phr ZnO + 4 phr MgO) with organic accelerators (ETU, TMTD) at 150°C to 170°C. Sulfur-modified grades use sulfur bridges; mercaptan-modified grades use carbon-carbon links.

Ethylene Propylene Diene Rubber (EPDM) Characteristics:

Machinability: Cryogenically machined; waterjet cut without abrasive garnets for pure elastomer gaskets.

Formability / Cold Working: Readily compounded in internal mixers with high paraffinic oil and carbon black loading. Extruded into dense and sponge weatherstrip profiles with continuous microwave/hot-air vulcanization (HAV) lines; precision injection molded.

Heat Treatment & Annealing: Vulcanized via sulfur-accelerator systems for rapid extrusion cure or organic peroxide systems (dicumyl peroxide, DTBP) for superior compression set, heat resistance up to 150°C, and steam resistance.
